What Does It Mean That Humans Are Made In God’s Image?

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them…”

It’s a phrase many of us have heard…

But what does it actually mean?

Because when we look at ourselves—our flaws, our struggles, our inconsistencies—it can be hard to believe that we reflect anything close to God.

Yet the Bible says we do.

Being made in God’s image doesn’t mean we look like God physically. It goes deeper than that.

It means we reflect something of His nature.

His ability to love.
To create.
To choose.
To show compassion.
To seek justice.

There is something within us that mirrors who He is.

But here’s the tension…

If we are made in God’s image, why don’t we always reflect Him well?

Because while we carry His image, we don’t always live in alignment with it.

We’re shaped by experiences.
Influenced by pain.
Affected by brokenness—both our own and others’.

So sometimes what’s meant to reflect God… becomes distorted.

Love turns into selfishness.
Truth turns into pride.
Freedom turns into control.

But that doesn’t erase the image—it just means it’s been clouded.

And maybe that’s where grace comes in.

Because the journey of faith isn’t about becoming someone completely different.

It’s about being restored to who we were always meant to be.

To reflect God more clearly.
To love more deeply.
To live more honestly.

Not perfectly—but intentionally.

It also changes how we see others.

Because if every person is made in God’s image…

Then every person carries value.
Dignity.
Worth.

Even the ones we struggle to understand.
Even the ones we disagree with.

That doesn’t mean we agree with everything—but it does mean we recognise their value.

So maybe being made in God’s image isn’t just a statement…

It’s an invitation.

To reflect Him.
To grow into who we were created to be.
And to see others through that same lens.

Because even in our imperfection…

There is something in us that points back to Him.
