When Someone Shows Emotions, Do We See Weakness – Or A Kind Of Honesty We Might Be Afraid To Express Ourselves?

Psalms 34:18

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

When someone shows emotion, do we see weakness—or a kind of honesty we might be afraid to express ourselves?

Emotions can make people uncomfortable.

Tears.
Frustration.
Vulnerability.

Sometimes we don’t know what to do with it. So instead of leaning in, we pull back. We label it as “too much,” “too sensitive,” or even “weak.”

But what if it’s not weakness at all?

What if it’s honesty?

Because showing emotion takes courage.

It means you’re not hiding.
Not pretending.
Not putting on a mask just to seem “strong.”

And if we’re honest, that kind of openness can feel confronting—not because it’s wrong, but because it exposes something in us.

Maybe we’ve learned to suppress our feelings.
To stay composed.
To keep everything in.

So when someone else expresses what we’ve buried, it can make us uncomfortable.

Not because they’re weak…

But because they’re being real.

The truth is, vulnerability isn’t the absence of strength—it’s a different kind of strength.

It takes strength to be honest about how you feel.
To admit when you’re struggling.
To let others see the parts of you that aren’t polished or put together.

And instead of judging that, maybe we’re invited to respond differently.

With patience.
With understanding.
With compassion.

Because behind every emotion is something deeper.

A story.
A wound.
A moment that mattered.

So maybe the question isn’t:
“Why are they so emotional?”

Maybe it’s:
“What are they carrying?”

Because when we start to see emotion not as weakness, but as honesty…

We create space for people to be real.

And maybe, just maybe, we give ourselves permission to be real too.
